What is DTF Printing?
If you've ordered custom apparel from us recently, you may have noticed we use something called DTF printing — and you might be wondering what that means. DTF stands for Direct to Film, and it's the printing technology we use on every single product at Stu Borncat Creations.
In short, DTF produces bold, vibrant, long-lasting designs that look incredible wash after wash. Here's how it works and why we love it.
How Does DTF Printing Work?
DTF printing is a multi-step process that transfers a design directly onto fabric using a special film and heat press. Here's the basic process:
- Design — Your artwork is printed in full color onto a special PET transfer film using DTF inks
- Powder adhesive — A hot-melt adhesive powder is applied to the wet ink on the film
- Curing — The film is cured with heat to bond the adhesive to the ink
- Transfer — The film is placed on the garment and pressed with a heat press, bonding the design permanently to the fabric
- Peel — The film is peeled away, leaving a smooth, vibrant, flexible print on the garment
The result? A print that's soft to the touch, stretches with the fabric, and holds up beautifully through repeated washing.
DTF vs. Other Printing Methods
Wondering how DTF stacks up against other popular methods? Here's a quick comparison:
| Method | Colors | Durability | Minimum Order | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DTF | Unlimited | Excellent | 1 piece | Any design, any fabric |
| Screen Printing | Limited | Excellent | 12–24 pieces | Simple designs, bulk orders |
| Embroidery | Limited | Excellent | Varies | Logos, hats, polos |
| Heat Transfer Vinyl | Limited | Good | 1 piece | Simple text/shapes |
| Sublimation | Unlimited | Excellent | 1 piece | Polyester only |
DTF wins when you need full-color, detailed designs with no minimums on virtually any fabric — which is exactly what we do.
What Makes DTF Special at Stu Borncat Creations?
At Stu Borncat Creations, we've built our entire business around DTF because it lets us do things other methods simply can't:
- No minimums — Order one shirt or one hundred, the quality is identical
- Unlimited colors — Photorealistic designs, gradients, fine details — all possible
- Any fabric — Cotton, polyester, blends, nylon — DTF works on them all
- Faux effects — We can replicate the look of embroidery, puff printing, and enamel pins using DTF — without the added cost
- Fast turnaround — Most orders are produced in 2–4 days
What is Faux Puff DTF?
You may have seen some of our designs labeled “Faux Puff” — this is one of our favorite DTF techniques. Traditional puff printing uses raised ink to create a 3D texture. With Faux Puff DTF, we replicate that raised, dimensional look using special DTF techniques — giving you the visual effect of puff printing at a fraction of the cost.
Same goes for our Faux Embroidery designs — they look stitched, but they're DTF printed. Bold, detailed, and durable.
Is DTF Printing Durable?
Absolutely. When properly cared for, DTF prints last the life of the garment. Here are a few tips to keep your prints looking their best:
- Wash inside out in cold water
- Tumble dry low or hang dry
- Avoid ironing directly on the print
- No bleach on printed areas
Follow these simple steps and your Stu Borncat design will look great for years.
